Description

Very big antique box trunk made from mahogany around 1900, probably. It has removable sections inside and the interior is partly lined with green felt. Brass corners on the top and a recessed brass handle in the lid. We've stripped the original, very worn varnish and waxed it. This was described as a silverware coffer when we bought it: to keep your silver under lock and key when you're not using it, I guess. I don't know about that but perhaps. I have a feeling that the sections have been put in to use as shelves, with the box on its end, like a cupboard: the dividers are felted on one side only and, while there are marks from where there were handles on the box ends, those have gone, perhaps to provide a flat bottom. Just a theory, but it could certainly work, perhaps with some little rubber feet on the bottom to give the lid/door clearance. Each of the sides of this box are made of one piece of timber: a sign of its quality and age. Condition is pretty good: structurally very solid; slight bowing of the front means the lid needs a little wiggle to shut it. There are two locks on the lid but no keys (we'll try to find some: bonus if we do..). Some of the brass screws missing from the corners. Cosmetically there are various bumps and marks, particularly on the ends (see pics). Inside there had been some damp which meant some of the baize had to be removed and a couple more bits are loose.
